William McMaster Murdoch was officer of the watch when the Titanic collided with an iceberg. This makes him to one of the central figures in the drama.
But who was Murdoch? The right man at the right place in the right time?
Murdoch came from a Scottish seafaring family and started his career at sea in sail. Like many other sailors in those days, he eventually went into steam. After joining the White Star Line, he rose quickly through the ranks – until he got stuck as 1st officer. At least, he was officer aboard the flag ship of the company since 1905. And since 1907, he served constantly under the command of Captain Edward John Smith.
This website offers an overview on Murdoch’s life and his times. The purpose is to deliver the necessary information for deciding whether Murdoch was the right man at the right place in the right time when he was on watch on 14 April 1912 at 11:40pm ship’s time.
